Short Course, Environmental Chemistry of Heavy Metals, Uni Heidelberg

Short Course, Environmental Chemistry of Heavy Metals

13-16 July 2009

Hosted by
Institute of Earth Sciences,
University of Heidelberg

Goals
This four-day short course is designed to expose participants to
unifying concepts and critical issues in our understanding of the chemical
behavior of heavy metals in the environment. It will cover the basic
chemistry and biochemistry of heavy metals in the environment and the
influence of metal speciation on risk assessment and risk management. The
lectures are in English and will be given by leading experts in these
fields and will be complemented by hands-on laboratory experience on
how to minimize sample contamination during collection, processing and
analysis.
A preconference field trip to the Harz Mountains is planned for people
interested in a case study of the chemical behavior of heavy metals around
mining sites.
The four-day intensive course is aimed at graduate students, senior
undergraduate students with strong background in chemistry and scientists
in government agencies, industries and academia interested in recent
advancements in the field.
