Dear Colleagues,
The 20th. General Meeting of the International Mineralogical Association (IMA
2010) will be held in Budapest, Hungary, August 21th-27th 2010.
We would like to invite you to contribute to the session:
MC102: Modularity and modulation in minerals
Keynote lectures: Manuel Perez-Mato (Spain), Stefano Merlino (Italy)
Session description:
In recent years an increasing number of (complex) crystal structures were
described on the basis of recurrent modules, typically the biopyriboles. Even
more intriguing is the discovery of many structures where the Bravais
periodicity is violated to some extent, so new crystallographic methods are
needed to deal with them. At the same time, theoretical and software
developments allow solving almost routinely the crystal structures of twins.
Summarizing, the present session is intended to host oral and poster
contributions on experimental and theoretical aspects of the following
categories of crystal structures of minerals: (1) structures based on a Bravais
lattice and modules that may occur in different structures (sensu stricto
modular structures including polytypes, members of homologous, polysomatic
and related series); (2) structural architectures affected by incommensurate
periodicities; (3) twins, intended as crystal edifices based on oriented
individuals. Research on these structures involves different methods based on
diffraction, electron microscopy, spectroscopy, mathematics etc.
Final abstract submission deadline: 13 March 2010.
