Hazardous waste management poses a serious challenge to developing countries. Waste management and disposal systems often do not keep pace with the growing amounts of hazardous waste that are generated by increasing industrial production and the consumption of imported goods. Underground waste disposal, an essential element of the German and European waste management system, could be a possible approach to address these problems.

The concept shall be highlighted by a workshop jointly organized by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMU) and the Gesellschaft für Anlagen- und Reaktorsicherheit (GRS) mbH, a nonprofit experts and research organization with long experience in underground waste disposal. Based on a review of almost 40 years research and practice the workshop shall address the opportunities and challenges of this approach, especially with regard to a potential implementation in other global regions.

The participation is free of charge.
